A factsheet is useful when you know where to look

A pension fund factsheet can feel dense at first. It may include performance numbers, risk ratings, asset allocation, charges, objectives and top holdings all on one page.

Start with the objective. This tells you what the fund is trying to achieve. A cautious fund and a growth fund should not be judged by the same expectations.

Then look at the asset allocation and risk rating. These usually explain why the fund behaves the way it does. A fund with more shares will usually move more than one with more bonds or cash.

Performance matters, but it should come after context. Read it across several time periods and compare it with similar funds, not with a completely different strategy.
